I would suggest February/March. The days will be longer and the
sled-dogs are in full song. Most people think that Alaska is ONLY to
be visited in the summer, but that is a great mistake. Flying up,
especially on Alaska Airlines, is quite affordable. Rental cars are
expensive, but there are tricks of the trade. Make sure your auto
insurer can provide rental insurance for Alaska (to avoid the rip-off
prices here) and arrange for off-airport car rental from Enterprise.

Yup. I know that story too. I had to pay for my Canon indiscretion
quite dearly, but that turned out to be a good deal as SHMBO has had
me use it for video applications. As to replacing the 6D with
something else, nothing really looks attractive to me right now. I'd
like something SONY full-frame, but everybody is still pretty proud of
them (price-wise).
