I am completely befuddled by both Chris and you ignoring the XP option in Win7.
IT IS COMPLETELY FREE!
IT INSTALLS SIMPLY!
IT IS BULLETPROOF!
IT RUNS ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING THAT RAN UNDER XP - BECAUSE IT IS XP.
...But I *have* mentioned Win7 several times in this extended chain of
threads (and in private) :)

It's *not* completely free in this context - you'd still have to buy a
Win7 license and media - for PROFESSIONAL edition or better.

This is what I've thought, as that's the way it used to be. Based on the link someone else posted in this thread, it appears that it is now available from MS for installation for all versions of Win7.

The bad news is that support for this tool ended the same day as it did for
WinXP itself.

Yes. And the apps I run under it haven't been supported for many years. And yet, they continue to run perfectly. The only reason XP support was/is needed is if it is connected to the web. Mine doesn't, It runs in its own little world, innocent of the internet. I flip over to Win7 for that. If the app worked before support ended, t still does - mine does.

Support for Win7 ends in 2020.

Wanna put some money on that? MS wishful thinking. They tried to sunset XP before their major corporate base was ready. Many huge company ITs have only recently moved to 7. They aren't going to be ready for the next step until later than that. They are deeply, deeply conservative - for the simple reason that a little glitch can sink the ship.

To run DOS applications
(even within XP) properly - which is part of Chris's overall needs I
think

I may have misunderstood that part. I didn't run into any old DOS stuff that wouldn't run under XP, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

some sort of real DOS API emulation is needed. If you have to go
down this path anyway, you may as well use something that has no known
sunset date.

So many options... This is the big benefit of macs for many, there is
only one way- theirs - and one needs not care (or even know) about
anything else.

Good - and - bad. Good if it does what you need, bad if it won't. :-)
