Just for your information, the original quote by HCB didn't address sharpness 
as such, but rather non-blur for all I know.
Also implied are correctly focussed, clarity, non fuzziness, etc.

For instance, a photo that is NOT "nette" primarily suffers from motion blur, 
poor focusing or contrast, camera shake, flare, name it … not necessarily from 
a lack of lines/definiton, usw. 

That's how any native-speaker would get his sentence anyhow.
