The news today is full of really ugly things being done by really horrible
people. One of my friends said that not all those who voted Trump in are
racists. She was just fed up with the machine and needed someone to go in
and shake things up.

True. YOU may not be a racist. But by Trump not clearly denying any support
or association with people like Duke, by giving a sly wink on the side, and
with all of the anti-Hispanic and anti-Muslim spewing, today is the start
of an ugly new (old?) phase in America's history. By saying that you're
comfortable with what he stands for, even if you don't, then by association
you are just as bad. Just check the news for photos and tweets from all
over the country showing the newly-empowered Trash Class attacking anyone
remotely Muslim or Mexican or black. One college kid showed a photo of her
room - while she was at class, someone (possibly her roommate) made a
"wall" of shoes and stuff down the middle of the room with a note for her
to just get used to what's going to happen to her when President Trump
throws her ass out of the country. And that's one of the milder ones. Two
kids at SIU-C, down where I grew up, put on blackface and posed in front of
a Confederate flag. There are things happening now that would make the Klan
proud. One kid at UICC (that's here in Chicago) was stabbed.

The people who aren't garbage who voted for the man (and I use "man" only
in the chronological sense) thinking that he was looking out for them
turned a blind eye to the groundswell of sewage that was about to crash
over this country.

Several years ago, on a visit to Memphis, I visited the Lorraine Motel and
stood on the actual spot where MLK died (they have since redone the museum
and that balcony is off-limits). It was rather awe-inspiring. I tried to
get a sense of what happened there. As a middle-class white guy, I can't
possibly imagine what it was and is like to walk in their shoes, but I can
have empathy and do my best to be a better person and to honor the history
and sacrifices.
