Don't have an X-T1, but I have been confounded by the X-Pro1 in similar
circumstances. The clue is in the opening sequence of your Youtube clip, and
in Nathan's response. If it's the same as the X-Pro1, you MUST have the
camera in MF mode before you can use the MF assist features. I assume it's a
rotary switch on the front left of the camera.

here is another video pertaining to the X-T1.

As hard as I try I am unable to replicate the horizontal side to side 
split image seen on the full area of the X-T1's screen.

In fact I am unable to get into split screen mode by an extended period 
of pressing the 'Focus Assist' button.
