Switzerland is part of the so called European Free Trade Association.
It means giving up some sovereignty as well, as they have to comply with
many regulation of the EU in order to get the free trade benefits.
There is some friction between the EU and Switserland, because of
immigration restrictions the Swiss voted for. Negotiations are pending, I
understand from some sites...
There is also the European Economic Area, which is the EU plus 3 countries.
It provides for the free movement of persons, goods, services and capital.
It is an extension of the EFTA, not very suitable for the immigration
feared (which is why the Swiss didn't join ;-). But has additional benefits.
So the benefits for the UK depend on their willingness to comply to EU
rules, which they now no longer participate in making ;-).
