Thanks Ken, useful observations for the E-1.

I think I need to experiment to satisfy my curiosity on this one.

I am not an authority on the E-M5, but the E-1 I can answer.

With the E-1, you will be better off keeping the ISO low and extending the
exposure. Between ISO 100 and 400, the ISO is increased through a bias
increase, so the noise scales accordingly. However, 800 and 1600 are boost
exposures, which means that all noise and everything is boosted. It does get
ugly in a hurry.

With ISO boosting, the noise gain is usually linear. But with time
extension, it is not as linear. There comes a point with the E-1 where noise
increase levels out and the increase is at a lower rate.

The E-1 is a most unusual camera because it allows you to shadow recover
without banding artifacts. You can shoot it underexposed and recover the
image during the raw conversion. The advantage is over in-camera boost, is
that the noise-control algorithm in Lightroom is superior to what is
in-camera.

While I've shot many pictures at ISO 800 and 1600 with the E-1, my best
images have been at ISO 400 and keeping the exposure below 30 seconds. My
E-1s haven't liked going past 30 seconds.
