Virtually damaged.

Back in 1994 I was doing post-production on an album and was using a
pre-production version of a non-linear multi-track digital editor. I
was doing R&D on the audio compressor algorithm and with most digital
compressors, things started to go nasty at 4:1, and by the time you
got to 8:1, all of the digital compressors created a cess-pool of
audio stew. But this algorithm was designed for extreme settings. 20:1
was actually usable!!! But, no, 20:1 wasn't good enough for me.

40:1

You ask me how in the world ANYBODY could use 40:1 compression?

Well, it got worse.

We took the four-bar hook of the song, did a time compression of it
down to a second in length, then pounded it through the 40:1 cheese
grater and stored it in a sampler, then used the drum kit's snare drum
mike pickup to trigger to the sound.

The snare hit was blended in with the extreme time/dynamic compression
so every time the snare was hit, the hook of the song was actually
played within the "white noise" of the snare hit.

By 1994, I know this had been done several times on significant
releases, but the work involved prior to the digital editor era was
gut-wrench. I had documented the technique, made adjustments to the
actual algorithm and taught it to a number of top audio engineers. The
technique had died out and then made an appearance again a couple of
years ago in hip-hop.

It's almost impossible to identify because it's blended in just below
the volume of the snare itself.
