I wish I could point to the source but I remember reading somewhere that my 1999 Chrysler LHS has 125 micro-processors distributed throughout its electrical system. No doubt a modern car has many more and much more powerful ones.

I suppose you are right, Chuck. I have a 2004 Honda CR-V with about 210K
miles on it. It is pretty un-fancy as far as electronics go, but I can
think of three things that are always on: digital clock (LCD), digital
odometer (LCD) and at least the volatile memory of the engine management
computer. It is hard to believe that these three items would draw enough
from the battery to shorten its life. The first two could run off the
electricity generated by a potato; the last I have no idea but I doubt it
takes much to keep the memory alive.

Thirty years ago the radio and the instruments were probably the only
things drawing power when the car was running during the day. Then add
lighting at night. And setting in the garage doing nothing... the battery
was also likely doing nothing.

Going back to 1999 my Chrysler LHS (which I still own and drive every day)
is electronically always on. When we would go to Florida for the winter it
was left behind until we returned some 3 months later. The owner's manual
stipulates that you must remove a particular 10 amp fuse if you're not
going to drive the car for some 4-6 weeks (I can't remember the exact
number). If you don't follow that advice you will have a dead battery
later on.

I'd say that was quite good. Something in the car battery equation has
changed though. Thirty years ago I routinely got 7-8 years out of a car
battery. These days I'm lucky to get 3-4.

Bummer, I had to replace the bimmer battery, as it bought the farm. Dead

a doorknob. Not bad for the original battery though. 2004
