I used to have those imps in the sat-nav in my car.
They had a big map table (representing just UK and Ireland's roads) with
tiny little cars and long sticks to push them around.
Now it's been outsourced to India and there's a giant call-centre with real
people and a scale map of all the world's roads. (That map almost covers
the whole surface area of India now...)
