[OM] CS5 Photoshop advice requested

I occasionally use the clone stamp tool to remove small blemishes on 
tiff and jpeg images.
The tool shows up on-screen either as a circle having the pixel diameter 
of one's choice or as a small cross hairs symbol. The size of this 
symbol  remains the same regardless of the chosen pixel diameter of the 
stamp.
My question is : what do I have to do to convert the cross hairs symbol 
into the visible on-screen circle which defines the area of the stamp ?
