The wind speed has to be pretty high, Dave, to put it out of action.  Our local 
turbine should be up a very large proportion of the time: i.e. the wind is high 
enough to turn it but not so high that the blades have to be feathered (or 
furled).  That up-time was part of the cost-benefit analysis undertaken by the 
organisation making it happen.

I watched some large turbines the other day in gusts of up to 35kts and they 
were very well controlled.  Gusts above that are pretty rare and they wouldn’t 
place them in windy places if high winds might be a threat.  The large offshore 
wind farms are a very sizeable investment.
