That "layers" voodoo is the primary thing I need to learn how to use.  I'm
paying for PSCC - I really need to sit down and force myself to learn all
magic sleight-of-hand stuff.

Since chalk would disappear too easily, I'm considering bringing three
nails with wide, flat heads and tapping them into the asphalt.  Those will
be my spikes for placing the tripod every time.
