Anticipating the shot and calibrating the entire "system" reaction
time is the key to this when dealing with something that is
predictable and repeated. It took me a long time to figure out the
delay to the OM-2S and ended up using other cameras for faster
response items.

Sporting events have a lot of predictability to them and your timing
the shot is no different than the batter learning when to start
swinging. And for pro ball, that's before the ball ever leaves the
fingers.

Wildlife is another story. I've done a ton of eagle photography
through the years and have found that the OM-2S is pretty well
worthless for that ("everything is going so slowly--I think we
dying"), the DMC-L1 is also pretty laggy, so I have to backtime my
shot a lot. The E-1 was the golden goose for this, though. It was very
easy to nail the shot with the E-1. If I'm using live-view with the
DMC-L1, you might as well figure that the eagle is in the next county
before the picture is taken.

EVFs are certainly a problem for street photography where timing is so
critical, but usually not exactly predictable. Unlike a pitcher
winding up, you know that something is going to happen, but the
precise moment is not known. There is no doubt that Leica is
absolutely best at it. Besides, with street photography, you usually
only have one chance. You need to have the camera prefocused and ready
to raise to the eye and shoot in one smooth and quick motion without
delay. Once the camera is "seen" the moment is passed and there are no
second chances.
