My personal 10 step approach to reasonable security:

1. Use long, fairly complex, but memorable passwords (https://xkcd.com/936/).
Do not reuse passwords on multiple sites. Change sensitive passwords often
2. Don't click without knowing the true URL
3. Set your home, ISP-provided router to provide the best protection you
can (and that it allows). Don't leave default settings in place.
4. Use your OS's built-in (or an add-on, if you prefer) firewall
5. Make sure any wireless you have uses the strongest encryption your
router allows
6. Don't do financial stuff on public networks (like Starbucks) or using
Windows
7. Be sure to run a decent anti-virus program, and keep it up to date
8. Patch/update regularly
9. Monitor your systems and accounts, to the best of your abilities, for
any evidence of compromise
10. Quit worrying. You're now already more secure than most of the millions
of much easier targets out there.

Is this foolproof? Oh, hell, no. A determined hacker or a government will
compromise something, sooner or later. There are lots more things you can
do. But the above are relatively easy to learn or implement, and shouldn't
make you nuts.
