Thank you very much, there is loads of stuff to consider there.  Your point 
about 3 vs 4 is persuasive, as is the fact that the older model might work as 
well as the newer – at much lower cost.

I too want simplicity of carriage and setup, but also sturdiness and I think 
that the conventional tripod will win over the Trekpod.

I shall also consider the extra weight of the cheaper aluminium model.
