That's part of it. MPEG Stereo Joint mode and all deriviitives combine
same content (mono) in the primary channel and then the second channel
is L-R. In fact, most broadcast forms of stereo use some variation of
L+R, L-R encoding. Normally works fine, but does tend to cough the
golden hairball when you feed it out-of-phase material. Dolby Surround
(RIP, Ray), actually uses out-of-phase signal encoding to place a
center channel and a surround channel in a standard LR audio stream.
