More common that you would think. I almost always put a mike on the
guitar amp/speaker and also run DI into the board. I like doing this
for both bass guitars and regular electric guitars when the musician
has cabinets he's playing through. With kick drums, we sometimes run
two mikes on it as well as have electronic drums or processing mixed
in. Keyboards can be a real trip because to create a 3D wall of sound,
we'll delay and pitch shift one channel. All this stuff ends up in the
subs too. I've had to hit the phase-reverse switch on a mike channel
many, many times through the years.

The job of an amplifier is to move the speaker coil. That part is
obvious. But the second job of an amplifier is to stop the speaker
from moving. A amplifier that is good for midrange and high
frequencies is rarely as good as a sub-woofer amplifier because it
doesn't provide enough damping capability. Otherwise, the cone will
bounce like an old Ford Fairlane with dead shocks.

Reminds me of the time I went to major concert at an outdoor venue.
Being ADHD, I couldn't sit still for more than two minutes, so I
roamed around. One section was literally quiet and you couldn't hear
anything but the subs. The two speakers in the stack covering that
section were out of phase of each other and cancelled each other out.
Oops.
