Thanks, Piers. Considering the price and rarity, I'd take a flat needle file
and square up the slot. It would be wider and allow a touch of rotation,
but............. Haven't worn one out which tells you they sit on the
shelf. :-)

Don's description was spot-on, Donald, but your diagnosis is only half-way
there - in my experience it's not a problem with the chrome strip not
clicking in, but a question of it not staying in! Again, in my experience
the problem is on the 'other side' - in my case with a worn mount, but in
your case it's the 1.4x. Look on the front of the 1.4x for the slot that Don
mentioned, adjacent to the triangular shaped diaphragm actuator,
diametrically opposite the green dot. The notch is square, but at an angle
to the radius of the adaptor, as a result the left hand edge is at an acute
angle. I reckon that on yours it isn't acute, more likely rounded, with the
effect that the chrome strip on the lens is not retained in place.

Note also that the tabs mentioned by others are simply for the diaphragm
coupling, they do not retain the lens on the teleconverter (or the mount).
Worse than that, they must be free to rotate, so using tape to hold the lens
and teleconverter together will prevent you operating the diaphragm. But the
300/2.8 is happy enough at 2.8!

You'll keep an eye open for a spare, eh? On the off-chance that you quest is
unsuccessful, you could do worse than borrow one. (HINT).

loose!), but the button you press on the lens to remove the 1.4 is a
spring-loaded pivoted arm which has a protusion on the far end. This clicks
into a slot in the 1.4 mount flange (straight across from the green dot) and
locks it in place. For now, why not just rotate the lens to the left
instead of the right for verticals. The camera weight should keep it on.

Thanks, Don. For all the time poking, prodding and staring at it, I never
noticed the little bit at the end of the strip.

It's not clicking in, for some reason, the linkage between the 1.4 and the
lens. If I watch the release button, rotating the lens (or camera) causes
the button to depress all on its own, releasing the assembly.

As you say, I'll be cautious (if the old brain retains the info under
pressure!), and afterwards I may dismantle it and have a look.

Meanwhile, I'll keep an eye open for a spare...
