Hi Ian,

As a quick test I put my 12-60 on my OM-D. It sounds like it takes 8-12
steps to reach focus. Probably too slow for moving objects. If you are
almost on focus, probably manual focus would be quicker.

The m4/3 12-50 seems to be a very nice lens with very quick focusing. I
haven't made any large prints but quick hires viewing in photoshop shows
that the more megapixels in the OM-D are achieving more resolution than
anything on my E-3. I think most OM-D users will seldom put anything but
m4/3 lenses on it. The lenses are small and light weight. Although the
length of the 12-50 isn't much less than the length of the 12-60, it looks
quite small next to it. For 'everyday use' I carry my canon in a lowepro
mini trekker backpack, my E-3 in a micro trekker backpack, and my OM-D in a
Domke F-5XA (basically a purse). The OM-D kit doesn't reach the ultrawide
14mm/7mm of the other two but they don't come close to the 300mm(600 equiv)
of the OM-D kit. The size/weight difference of the kits is very noticeable.

My impression is that the firmware in the OM-D works very well with the
m4/3 lenses but falls back to a "I don't know anything" brute force step
search when a 4/3 lens is mounted. The 50/2 makes what sounds like a
minimum of a dozen small steps (probably more than any other lens I've
briefly put on it).

On the other hand the magnified live view with touch screen looks like it
is going to make tripod mounted manual focusing very nice.

I too was hoping the OM-D would take the 4/3 lenses and focus at least as
well as an E3. Unfortunately I don't think that will happen. Probably if a
person wants extreme wide angle or fast lenses they will be stuck in the
4/3 side, while m4/3 provides a better solution for normal/typical uses.

With the OM-D being such a nice normal camera would Olympus be able to sell
enough successor's to the E-5 to keep that development profitable?
Hopefully at least one more iteration with more megapixels! It is caught
between 20-30 mega pixel full frame and very capable small cameras and I'm
afraid will loose to both ... lower prices on used f2 lenses, but a
firmware change might change the game to big lenses on the OM-D(x?)
