Both very interesting shots.  I'd never heard of the Sutter Buttes so 
had to look them up.  <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sutter_Buttes>  I've 
always considered a butte and a mesa as pretty much synonymous but I see 
that buttes are not necessarily flat topped.
