Brian, are you sure you were not measuring the wireless connection speed
between the PC and the wireless router, rather than the speed on the wired
connection from the wireless router out to the ISP?

You can check the latter using on-line tools such as
http://www.ozspeedtest.com/

And, to be pernickety, I think you mean 54Mbps, not 54MBps - the former
being megabits per second, the latter megabytes per second. The difference
is significant!

Subject: [OM] (OM) OT Internet connection speed

This post is just for information and novelty :-)

I'm not fishing for advice or whatever.

On dial-up, in a house where we have several filters to distinguish between
dial-up and broad-band, on dial-up I commonly get anything between 19.2 kbps
to ( if lucky) 33.3 kbps. In urban Christchurch I used to get close to what
the modem allows - 55.6 kbps.
My partner's son who lives with us and uses broadband, typically gets about
100 kbps.
I noticed today when juggling images on facebook that mostly my speed was
anywhere between 600 and 800 bps. For about 15 minutes it was down to an
astounding 3 to 6 bps !! And still the electrons moved data.

Until about 8 months ago I used the computer at my partner's old house,
about 7 KM away, in a rural setting. Dialup speed there was about 30 kbps
(memory).
You can imagine my astonishment this afternoon when I visited an old
neighbour up her (ex) road. They have just bought a 2nd hand laptop ($500)
and it looks recent, with wireless communication inside the house to cover 3
metres through a wall, and they are on broadband with the SAME company who
delivers to my partner's son.

Their connection speed is 54MB/s 54 MB/s

I saw it myself. She knows very little about winders computers and let me
look at the connection details; Didn't take long to find. 54 MB/s !
Amazing.

I will be making some enquiries.

By the way, the i7 processor computers I referred to in a post yesterday,
were winders machines, and really quite affordable. About $1,800 NZ, but I
don't remember what that included. Naturally, many components could be
upgraded at increased cost(s).
These very fast machines were developed for people whose primary interest is
playing games online.
