It seems that many US carriers want to charge extra to enable tethering.
www.junefabrics.com has a nice almost free alternative. It works quite well
with Android, enough so that I discontinued my data connection card in my
laptop. (You can talk on the phone and web surf simultaneously).

Specifically for iphone: http://www.junefabrics.com/iphone/index.php

But I don't understand why anyone who can type would want an ipad...

That is correct. AT&T was the one who said "no" to tethering until a
few months ago. And when they did finally allow Apple to turn it on,
it's very limited. Those of us with grandfathered 5GB "unlimited"
(yeah, right) plans are left out. The only ones with tethering are the
ones who agree to one of the new 2GB plans. And then the tethering plan
is a separate plan from your standard data package, and has its own pool
of bits instead of allowing you to siphon from your regular pool. And,
like the regular pool, there is no such thing as "rollover bits". If
you don't use all the data you paid for, too bad.

All of the cell carriers over here are that bad. They've got us by the
short'n'curlies and they know it.
