Even in the northeast it makes a big difference which state you're in. 
The reason that my 11 year old Chrysler LHS is still not showing rust is 
that it spent most of its life in the Boston area.  Massachusetts used 
much less salt than New York (especially around the watersheds) and the 
difference in older cars is very evident.
