One time down in Virginia (Highland County) I was staying overnight in
this 150-200 year old cabin. When we opened the door to the kitchen we
saw relatively fresh snake skins shed on the floor. Copperheads.

We carefully scoped the place out, but didn't find any. The keeper of
the place told us that he had found and moved out a couple of them the
previous week, but didn't leave any shed skins laying around....

As we pulled up to the cabin, there were these sticks coming out of
the wood shake roof. Upon closer examination, those sticks (15-20 of
them) were garter snakes in the roof and they slide out from the peak
into the air a foot or more. As we'd get closer, they'd all back off
into the roof but would emerge a minute later.

The outhouse was off-limits as the keeper had told us that he hadn't
gotten the copperheads out of that yet and, oh by the way, stay out of
the tall grass....

That night as we were attempting to sleep in the screened-in porch
(classic mountain cabin), the moonlight revealed that the ceiling was
moving. As we flipped on a flashlight, there were several snakes
above us in the open rafters. One proceeded to drop onto the occupied
sleeping bag...

I never stayed in that cabin again. But the pictures from that
location remain as some of the best I've ever taken.
