One doesn't need to use OEM batteries, just get an equivalent from a
reputable battery manufacturer. I've been using Maxell in my Minolta
and Energizer in my Canon. At the time I bought the Energizer I think
it was only about $25. These days reputable batteries other than OEM
are getting harder to find and cost savings even harder. Here's
Energizer's ERD510 which is the BLM-1's equivalent. But at Amazon it's
only about $1 cheaper than the BLM-1 from Oly.

The Canon equivalent is Energizer ER-C590 which is some $3-4 cheaper.

I think the high cost of lithium-ion batteries from reputable
manufacturers probably has as much to do with product liability as
quality manufacturing. Lithium-ion batteries truly are dangerous.
Check the Energizer MSDS for lithium-ion batteries. See Section III.
