Intumescent strips are fitted into a groove around the outside of the door.  
When they get hot, they expand to fill the small gap between the door and the 
frame, to block the passage of smoke.

Not really my subject, but I was Fire Officer for a Victorian building when we 
had to spend a fortune on meeting fire regulations for offices.
