I like the house skeletons... About the farmers, I'm living in a small
town in a rural area and
heave quite some farmer friends. I really understand their anger. If
you would know what they get for their products and the relation to
the final price you would be terrified. I really admire the farmers,
which are doing hard work out on the fields, rain or not, and taking
care for our basic needs. My father has a blueberry field, when we go
to the fruit auction we can get an average of 2 euro a kilo. For that
price you have to buy the auctioneers little boxes, packaging, etc,
etc... Then you see them at carrefour (there is an identification
number) for 2,5 euro for 100 grams. That is more than ten times the
price we get bruto, and twenty times the price if we count in our own
cost. So we stopped going to the auction houses, searched for direct
customers and now sell for a standard price of 8 euro a kilo all
season long. we get 4 times the price and the customers get one third
the price. You see this happening here locally more and more, and if I
go shopping @ the farms (which we do a lot) we support the farmers and
still get our fresh fruit and vegetables for far less than the
supermarket. Farmers can do this on a small scale for the local market
and for fruit, vegetables and sometimes meat, but if you are into
milk, things change: you can only sell to big corporations which
dictate the price, so no, the farmers don't have to be paid by tax
money, but they should get a fair price for what they do. If you'ld
have had a decline in income of 30 - 50% in the last 5 years you
wouldn't be happy either. Il'd rather have happy farmers than rich
multinationals :).

I know apple farmers which started selling directly and can now live a
decent life in stead of living in a few rooms inside the barn. But it
takes courage to sell directly, and you need the contacts, farmers are
not managers mostly...
