OK, I redid the VueScan files. Originally, the VueScan files were outputted
in sRGB instead of aRGB like the Nikon files. All files were IDENTICALLY
processed in PWP 5.0 which was the following steps. PWP's colorspace is
ProPhoto RGB and all files were converted into this colorspace with
"Maintain Full Gamut" intent.
1. Resize to 800 pixel width.
2. Sharpen (to compensate for resize algorithm--not to improve image file)
3. Add border (20 pixel white)
4. Convert to sRGB IEC61966-2.1 (Maintain Full Gamut)
5. Convert to 24-bit from 48-bit file
6. Save As JPEG at 93%

The very last image has been modified. It's the VueScan Plain image with a
curves adjustment (black-point set) to put the shadows back down in the
proper place--and the border is STILL to high--but at least it more fairly
shows what the multi-exposure function of VueScan does.
