I had an HP9180 for a month and used a full set of cartridges making a fair
pile of prints.

It broke down, and although I would have taken a replacement there wasn't
one in the country so I returned it and traded up to the Epson 3800. It
really does ship with half its price in full ink cartridges.

I've had it now for about seven months, printing at about the same rate I
did with the HP. So far I've replaced one cartridge (the light light black)
about a month ago, and it looks like the next one (light black) will need
doing in a couple more weeks. The rest are all still above or around half
full.

Whatever the maths, it seems to work for me - I'm already up on where I
would have been with the HP, and to my eye, the superiority of prints on
Ilford Gallerie Smooth Pearl and Harmann Gloss FB AL is just discernable
with the 3800. Even with standard profiles from the paper manufacturers.

This is just my own experience, but I am completely convinced for myself.
