I believe that the current "CMOS Rules, CCD Drools" attitude is temporary.
 Early on, it was recognized that CMOS was inferior to CCD in multiple
areas. What Canon did with CMOS is nothing short of amazing and then created
a marketing advantage. The common masses now assume that CMOS is the trick
and CCDs have moss growing all over them. Meanwhile, high-end sensors for
both medium-format and custom sensor applications remain CCD.

I predict that it'll take two more years and then we'll see the re-emergence
of CCD as the preferred sensor technology because of the advantages which
were originally true are still true and the on-chip noise control which has
temporarily given CMOS the SNR advantage will have been eliminated.
