I'm sorry, but I have never previously encountered a page which I found 
so non-intuitive to use.  In addition, the thumbnails on both sides take 
up valuable screen real estate and the disappearing thumbnails lead to 
confusion when you want to go back.  It may work if you only ever step 
forward but stepping back leads who knows where.

Your alternative page was instantly usable without giving it a second 
thought except that I was looking for a means to scroll the thumbnails 
up and down for a second or two until I noticed they were divided into 
discrete pages.  IMHO that one is far superior.
