They have a lethal 'killing claw' - the mid-claw of the three forward  
facing is dagger-like.
That's what they use to fight with each other. The wildlife people  
are VERY careful of it when they do relocaions.
However, as I understand, the death resulted from an unexpected  
collision.
Someone got run down by one in the forest and they are very fast and  
heavy.
Unlike your 'Nandues', Cassowaries will come into town demanding food  
if they are desperate.
If they are successful, they become acclimatised to humans and can be  
dangerous.
They are the biggest Australian native animal (apart from passing  
whales).

I assumed that the Chabaron was the Lesser or Darwin's Rhea as it is  
so much smaller.
