Hi,
I flew out of, and back into, Gatwick airport last month. From my
experiences, if all you have to worry about is CF cards getting zapped
you're doing well.
Seriously, no problems with our CF cards and xD cards, all of which went
through the zapper (some in the cameras, some not). The manners and
courtesy of the security staff, however, leave a lot to be desired. The
sheer desire to do that job should automatically prevent one from being
allowed to do it - they all seem to be of below-average intelligence and
just there for the power-trip.
A far cry from the security staff at Naples airport who, despite it not
being there native language, managed to converse extremely politely with
us when we were being zapped. Polite, smiles, and even a "please" and
"thank you". That sort of thing goes a long way, especially when our
security people seemed to only just manage a grunt.
With apologies to anyone who has family or friends working as security
at Gatwick - there's an exception to every rule.

Airport X-ray scanners are said to put developed and undeveloped film at
risk. Is there any comparable risk in respect of digital camera memory
cards?
If security counter scanners do pose a risk to memory cards is there any
speculation about which airports are riskier than others? In particular
