Bob,

I own both the E-3 and an E-410 so can offer some comparisons between the
two that should be relevant to your question as the 410 and 510 share a lot
of design elements & features.

I will answer between your questions below:

Subject: [OM] Four questions for you experts

1. Except for the viewfinder (which I think is a very big deal, but I'm
not sure it's a $1000 deal), will I see significant differences between 510
and E-3 assuming the same lens is used ??

The E-3 has a far superior viewfinder over the 410 for me. It is no way near
the OM vista-view but is a significant improvement. Only your bank balance
can say if it is worth the extra funds. If I recall you have tried both
cameras, which did you prefer?

2. Will I see a significant difference between the 12-60 and the 510 kit
lens ? That is, would you put the 12-60 on the 510?

Yes the 12-60 is better than the kit 14-42mm. It's not really a fair
comparison though as the FL range is significantly different not to mention
the 4X price difference. I have put the 12-60 on the 410 but as Andrew F
suggests the 14-54 is a better balance on the 410/510. You may wish to
consider getting a 14-54 instead of the 12-60 and put the extra funds
towards the E-3?

3. Will I see a significant difference between the high-end Zuikos (the 100
f2, 35 f2, 50 MIJ, 21 f2) mounted on the E-3/510 compared to the
12-60? (Since I'm landscape oriented, the autofocus is not a real big
deal for me.)

With the 2x factor all your lovely wide angles become not so wide so if you
are looking to do landscape in digital it is best to get a dedicated digital
specific lens. If you are going for the 14-54 maybe the 11-22 would be a
good second lens? If you get the 12-60 you will probably be fine with just
one lens. (I am assuming your budget won't allow for the 7-14 at this
point). I don't think you will see much, if any, performance difference for
a given lens when mounted on either the E-3 or the E-510. Operating the
manual focus lenses on the E System requires advance learning time and
patience in practice. It would be best done well in advance of a big trip so
I would suggest simplicity here is your better option. In my experience the
longer & slower OM lenses work best on the E System.

4. I've heard rumblings of price reductions on the E-3. What is your
understanding / expectation on E-3 pricing in the next several months?

I was one of the first here to buy an E-3, almost as soon as it became
available at Calumet I had one shipped overnight. Its current price is not
something I worry about and I would suggest you do the same. I will say that
it is interesting how long the E-3 has held its price in the marketplace.
The price is going to come down at some point regardless of when you
choose to buy. In 4-5 years it will be a worthless brick in terms of value
on the second hand market. You won't ever get back what(ever) you paid for
it. However you will have lots of great pictures so I say again don't worry
about it.

Hopefully your CDFO approves your request for financing ;) .

Thanks very much!!!!! Your answers will be very helpful to me.

Bob Benson

Glad I can help, Dan S.
