They can't tell which way you *did* complete the transaction, but they
can certainly tell which way you *didn't*. The PayPal "method" for me
appears to be "hard-wired" into the auction completion mechanism -- the
moment it completes, PayPal sends a notice to the winning bidder with a
link to a PayPal invoice and instructions on completing the transaction
via PayPal. If it never completes, I'm essentially in violation of
PayPal's Terms of Use.
