Welcome back, Roger.

It seems to me that a decent 4000 dpi scanner gets pretty much  
everything off a piece of film. Flat bed scanners are doing better  
than that now with the added advantage of doing different sizes of  
film as well as not having to deal with the accumulation of dust  
inside a little closed box.

This site has some reviews and he usually compares the result to a  
Nikon film scanner.
