When I and some friends went to Crete in the spring, the airline we flew
out of Gatwick on (Monarch) had a *five* kilogram limit for carry-on,
and just *one* carry-on, if you please. Royce was forced to check
everything that had camera gear in it. I planned for this absurdly
light limit, and just had a KonicaMinolta A1 plus the JOBO Gigaview Pro
evolution, along with a few CF cards, some filters and the power
supplies. Just barely squeaked it all in.

Next trip, I'll have more gear (the A1's getting a little long in the
tooth), and I'll be forced to use a Pelican case and check it all.
Well, small mercies: at least in Britain and on the Continent they let
you actually lock the cases with real honest-to-God locks, instead of
those invitations to theft the U.S.'s TSA laughingly refer to as
"TSA-approved locks" (which most airline/airport security in the U.S.
simply cut through anyways, 'cause they can't be arsed to actually
follow the procedures to open 'em).

I'll never take my stuff through U.S. airspace. EVER. On the mainland,
Royce and I are probably going to do several road trips -- if I go back
to Hawaii (and I hope I do), I'll see if a pro shop will let me rent
once I get there.

Or maybe they'll start doing cruises to the Big Island... (which would
ROCK, by the way...)
