The two big adverse reactions with the statins (by 'big' I mean
those getting the most press vs most common) are a bump up in serum
levels of liver enzymes (statins main site of action is liver enzymes
where cholesterol is synthesized) and rhabdomyalysis which is the
breakdown of skeletal muscle proteins with release of myoglobin into the
blood stream. This can in turn lead to kidney problems. These are the
major serious adverse effects and are both rare.
The PDR reports a huge number of minor side effects that were
reported during clinical trials that range from facial swelling, dry
skin to cramps. No reports that I see specifically noting TMJ but there
have been some reports of joint pain.
Bear in mind that these types of side effects in large numbers
are always reported during clinical trials and most are not causally
related. Only use over years by many patients can reveal which are truly
drug-related and which are coincidence.
