But it is still shown as a subsidiary meaning - common usage and all  
that.
But then I know English teachers who wouldn't know the difference  
(standards have slipped).
And the term 'word' is used unusually in that an acronym can form a  
word that is merely pronounceable and doesn't actually hold real  
meaning (as in Qantas).

+Desa+(Indonesia) - considers all initialisms to be acronymic.
Frequently people play with names and word order to create a  
deliberate and attractive acronym for mnemonic effect.
And isn't there a special name for web initialisms like FYI and YMMV?
