Interesting.  According to Sanyo's site 
<http://www.sanyo.co.jp/koho/hypertext4-eng/0511/1101-2e.html> the AA 
product has been on the market since Nov 2005.  They also claim 85% 
charge retention after one year on the shelf at 20 degrees C.
