If the retaining ring has holes or slots a *large* pair of tweezers 
might work or possibly a pair of needle nose pliers if the tips are 
small enough.  You do need to be careful not to slip and damage the 
front element though.  If there are no holes or slots then you need a 
friction tool.  You need something just the right diameter but with a 
hollowed out center to clear the lens.  A rubber furniture leg cup might 
work or a jar lid with a piece of broad rubber band cemented to the edge 
or... whatever you can cobble together that's the right shape and size 
and has a grippy edge or can accept a glued on grippy edge.
