With all due respect Winsor, you ought to read the whole essay. Especially
Wendell Berry's response to the letters to the editor which followed the
first publication of the essay in Harper's, since your and Khem's reactions
are not dissimilar to those letters. There is not a writer in the United
States who has more meaningful things to say than Wendell Berry. IMHO of
course.
It only takes a little imagination to realize he's talking about tools that
operate without the benefit of electricity or fossil fuels, with muscle
power, which others have already noted is a form of energy that ultimately
comes from the sun.
