I've heard that new diesels will have much improved emissions,
considering that one exhaust component was as bad as dioxin (the most
toxic chemical known). Story I saw featured a device similar to a
muffler mounted catalytic converter. Once the exhaust passed through
it, exhaust was cleaner than gas engine exhaust.
One source of dioxins is from burning home garbage (including plastics)
in backyard incinerators (55 gallon drums).
