One thing I know absolutely nothing about is the expected life of an
image on a CF card which is just sitting on the shelf. I don't know if
it's essentially unlimited or if all those little magnetic bits
eventually dwindle away to nothingness.

I do know that CF cards do have an expected maximum number of write
cycles. It's on the order of 100,000 or so or a number which is large
enough that I'm not worried about if for camera use. Might be a
different story as a general usage "hard" drive but I've used them for
that too. But I do not know if those bits will eventually fade off into
the void sitting in the closet or if they're subject to flipping from
cosmic rays.

I do know that cosmic rays were a worry to at least one of IBM's memory
engineers when chip density hit 64K bits about 30 years ago. But that
problem was obviouly solved or else maybe didn't exist in the first place.
