My wife and I thought it looked like a young gray.  The red squirrels in our
area are distinctly red, difficult to mistake for a young gray.

My wife had an experience some years back with a red squirrel.  Our cat was
chasing one in our yard which then climbed up my wife's body where she
stood, sat on her shoulder and proceeded to scream squirrel obscenities at
the cat.  It then jumped off and ran into woods with the cat not far
behind.  Quite funny at the time. :)
