I meant to mention that you should not confuse the Tokina 28-80/2.8 with 
it's much cheaper 28-70/2.8 cousin.  Both are labeled AT-X PRO but the 
28-70 also carries an "SV" designation.  By all accounts I've read the 
cheaper lens is... well, a cheaper lens... in all respects.

Another point I just realized.  I was typically shooting at 80mm rather 
than 28mm and I don't think I was necessarily pointing near the sun but 
in 177 photographs I haven't noticed any evidence of flare.  I'll have 
to pay more attention to that at wider angles to see how it fares.

I took a couple hundred shots of the Brain Tumor Society's bike Ride for 
Research on Sunday.  That was also a full sun event and much of it shot 
at 28mm.  I briefly reviewed the images (which are not here right now) 
but don't recall any flare there either.  I'll have to go back and take 
a closer look.
