Two answers:
On full frame, a 25mm extension tube gives focusing from 1:2 down to
1:1. Shorter tubes give in between settings.
On 4/3, although it technically has the same repro ratios, many folks
used only to 35mm tend to find it seems different. If you take shots at
the same distance with the same lens on 35 mm and on 4/3, and then view
both results at the same print or screen size, the 4/3 image is enlarged
roughly twice as much. This makes it seem, compared to 35mm, that a
50/3.5 focuses from infinity to about 1:1 on a camera like your E-500,
because it captures only about half the image 35mm would.
