'Scuse me for ignoring your actual questions and picking up on this point,
but flash lighting actually gets softer when photographing small subjects
with the flash head close by.

If you can get the flash off-camera and close to the subject, you should be
able to get some nice, shape-revealing side lighting, you'll be able to use
a relatively low power flash (which also means v.short duration, good for
motion freezing), small aperture, isolate the background by differential
illumination and have a softer light than you'd get with the flash head
further away.
