Yeah, I reckon it's a purely digital phenomenon.
I'd say in the 20D the 1's in the digital sensor are lined up at right
angles to the direction of polarization of the reflected light (not allowing
the light to be detected) while in the A1 they are lined up parallel
(allowing the light to be detected).
